PC SUGGESTIONS 1. Install a good Anti-virus program on your PC if you surf the web, or use e-mail at all. If you can’t afford to pay for virus protection (according to many experts you can’t afford NOT to have it), there are a couple free anti-virus software options available to download from PC World’s website: 2. Make sure to keep your virus definitions up to date. Even though you purchase anti-virus software, you still need to download updates regularly because new viruses are being created all the time. Typically when you purchase anti-virus software, you will get free updates to new virus definitions for a year and then you pay a nominal amount each year after that to keep them current. 3. Never open an attachment in an e-mail from someone you don’t know. This is often how viruses are spread. 4. If you use your computer to connect to the internet at all, I would also recommend installing a firewall software program to protect your computer. A good free firewall program that I use is Zone Alarm, which you can download from PC World’s website: 5. Backup your data on a regular basis. You never know when a hard drive might fail or you might accidentally delete or change a file and want to restore it to its original state. 6. If your computer crashes, it’s a good idea to reboot it completely before trying to work with any programs that were running. Often, if your computer crashes, you’ll have a lot of other problems after that. Rebooting your computer again after a crash can help to avoid a lot of those problems. 7. It’s a good idea to keep your windows software up to date. If you are using Internet Explorer, you can click on Tools and then choose Windows Updates to check to see if you have all the latest updates. I would definitely recommend installing all the critical updates. The other windows updates are up to you. You can read through the descriptions of the updates and see if they are things you want or need. These updates can be patches or bug fixes or updates to plug security “holes” in the software. 8. Spyware and Adware have become almost as big of a problem as viruses these days. I recommend installing both of the free programs listed below and running them regularly to keep these pests off your computer. Make sure to run the web update option in each program before scanning to make sure you have all the latest fixes. |
